Description:

A website that provides both students and adults greater insight and motivation to achieve their dreams. It compile statistics of current industry leaders, including their majors, skills, and past experiences to better paint a picture of what a dream job could be and how a person can achieve it. Glass ceilings that have been broken won't seem hazy and dream jobs won't seem like their unreachable

Inspiration:

We saw that there was a void in simple, complex resources for future job opportunities and we thought we could hack the job hiring market and give student and adults the tools they need to be successful.

What it does:

It is a comprehensive guide towards any occupation that could be searched up. It compiles statistics from industry leaders and various job markets to prepare a reasonable guide for anyone willing to look. Hopefully in the future we want to roll out various implementation such as regional success stories or locals events that are happening that would help their career.

How we built it:

With a lot of persistence and caffeine. First we collected data, then we messed around with data storage, looking at postgreSQL and Google Cloud, but decided after meeting with a mentor to use a simple .CSV file to store and parse data in a website made with react. We started making wire frames with Balsamiq and laid out what we wanted it to look like to prepare for the website development. Since we are all pretty new to it, we spent a lot of time getting the handle of react and even more time making a presentable web page using Create React App.

Challenges we ran into:

We barely knew the technology we worked with. Most of time I ran around to find a mentor that could help me grasp concepts that were vital to developing the website and since JavaScript was new to everyone in the group, we started everything from square one. It was fun to approach the things that we wanted to do with new technology, but it took a lot of time and caffeine to do.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

We're personally proud that we got to learn about technologies that we never used before and actually make it work. Setting up the local site and the data parser were both fun things that we all never worked with and were excited to do. Now that we have done something with we feel great that we did it, but also disappointing we couldn't do more.

What we learned:

Mainly web development practices as most of us are studying within software development and it was fun working hands on with react, it's libraries, PostgreSQL, and google cloud.

What's next:

We have a lot planned out if we can find time to work on it. We want to complete the web page, expand the database, grow the careers list, make the career paths more personalized, provide greater detailed statistics, and much, much more. Hopefully we could all find time to work on it again.

Built with:

Create React App, Balsamiq, Trello, Slack, Victory, Papa parse, and underscore.js react libraries, google drive, google cloud platform, and nodejs
